How many courses should I choose in the doctoral program?

The doctoral program consists of a minimum of 21 credits for students admitted with a thesis master's degree and at least seven courses, two seminars, a proficiency exam, a thesis proposal, and a thesis study, provided that it is not less than 60 ECTS per academic year, totaling at least 240 ECTS credits. For students admitted with a bachelor's degree, it consists of at least 42 credits of 14 courses, two seminars, a proficiency exam, a thesis proposal, and a thesis study, totaling at least 300 ECTS credits.

Is a student who has taken the doctoral proficiency study but not taken the exam considered unsuccessful?

A student who has received the doctoral proficiency study but does not take the exam is considered unsuccessful.

Can students enrolled in a doctoral program choose courses from other higher education institutions?

In doctoral programs, upon the recommendation of the eabd/easd presidency and with the approval of eyk, a maximum of two courses for students accepted with a master's degree and a maximum of four courses for students accepted with a bachelor's degree can be selected from the courses offered at other higher education institutions. Undergraduate courses are not counted towards the course load and doctoral credit.

What are the requirements for applying to a PhD?

They must have a master's degree with thesis and have at least 55 ALES points in the score type of the program they applied for.

Except for medical, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary faculties and preparatory classes, candidates who have a bachelor's degree lasting at least ten semesters or who have gained expertise in a laboratory branch according to the principles arranged by the Ministry of Health, and graduates of the four-year pharmacy faculty, must have a grade point average of at least 2.50 out of 4.00 or an equivalent score out of 100 and have at least 55 ALES points in the score type of the program they applied for.

Those applying to the doctoral program with a bachelor's degree must have a grade point average of at least three out of four or an equivalent score and must have at least 80 ALES points in the score type of the program they applied for. The YÖK conversion table is used for the grades of candidates whose bachelor's degree grade does not have an equivalent in the four-point system.

Those who receive a bachelor's degree education lasting ten semesters, excluding preparatory classes, are considered to have a master's degree.

In the admission of students to the doctoral program, it is mandatory to get at least 55 points from the central foreign language exams accepted by YÖK or from international foreign language exams whose equivalence is accepted by ÖSYM.

In order to apply for doctoral programs in basic medical sciences, graduates of the medical faculty must have a bachelor's degree and have at least 50 basic medical points from the medical specialty training entrance exam or have at least 55 points in the numerical score type of ALES. Those who are not graduates of the medical faculty must have a master's degree, graduates of dentistry and veterinary faculties must have a bachelor's degree and must have at least 55 points in the numerical score type of ALES. The basic medical score is obtained by multiplying the standard score obtained from the basic medical sciences test-1 section in the medical specialty training entrance exam by 0.7; and the standard score obtained from the clinical medical sciences test by 0.3 and adding them together. Student admission to doctoral programs in basic medical sciences is made according to the evaluation criteria valid for other doctoral programs. However, in the admission of students to the doctoral program in basic medical sciences, it is mandatory to get at least 55 points from the central foreign language exams accepted by YÖK or from international foreign language exams whose equivalence is accepted by ÖSYM.

How are success scores calculated in doctoral programs?

In the admission to doctoral programs; ALES score, undergraduate grade point average, foreign language score, and written or oral exam result are evaluated. In the evaluation, 50% of the ALES or medical specialization exam score, 20% of the undergraduate grade point average for those applying for an integrated doctorate with an undergraduate degree, 20% of the master's grade point average for other doctoral programs, 10% of the foreign language score, and 20% of the written or oral exam score are considered, and a ranking is made among those who score at least 65 in total. The success score of candidates who do not take the written or oral exam is not calculated. If the success scores are equal, priority is given to the candidate with a higher ALES or medical/dental specialization training entrance exam score, undergraduate/master's graduation grade, foreign language score.

How long is the duration of the doctoral program?

The doctoral program, excluding the time spent in scientific preparation, is eight semesters with a maximum completion time of twelve semesters for those admitted with a master's degree with thesis; it is ten semesters with a maximum completion time of fourteen semesters for those admitted with a bachelor's degree, regardless of whether they register for each semester.

The maximum time to successfully complete the credit courses required for the doctoral program is four semesters for those admitted with a master's degree with thesis, and six semesters for those admitted with a bachelor's degree. The student who cannot successfully complete his/her credit courses within this period is disaffiliated from the institute.

The student who successfully completes his/her credit courses, is found successful in the proficiency exam and whose thesis proposal is accepted, but cannot complete his/her thesis work by the end of the twelve or fourteen semesters specified in the first paragraph, is disaffiliated.

What can be done if a student admitted with a bachelor's degree cannot complete the doctoral program within the time limit?

Students who have applied to the doctoral program with a bachelor's degree and who cannot complete their credit courses and/or thesis work within the maximum period, or who are unsuccessful in the doctoral thesis, are given a non-thesis master's degree upon request. An additional semester may be given to the student to fulfill the credit load, project, and other conditions necessary for the non-thesis master's degree.

When is the proficiency exam taken?

Students who have successfully completed their courses and seminars must enter the proficiency exam by the end of the latest fifth semester for students accepted with a master's degree, and by the end of the latest seventh semester for students accepted with a bachelor's degree. A student can take the proficiency exam a maximum of two times in a year.

What are the procedures related to the student who failed the proficiency exam?

The student who fails the proficiency exam is taken to the exam again in the next semester. Regardless of whether he/she has registered for the courses in the relevant semesters, the student who does not take the exams is considered unsuccessful. At the end of these exam rights, the relationship of the unsuccessful student with the doctoral program is terminated.

When and how is the thesis monitoring committee established?

A thesis monitoring committee is formed within a month with the recommendation of the relevant eabd/easd presidency and the approval of eyk for the student who is found successful in the proficiency exam. The thesis monitoring committee consists of three faculty members. In addition to the thesis advisor, one member from inside and outside the relevant eabd/easd takes place in the committee. The member who will be from outside the main science branch should be a faculty member close to the thesis topic. In case of appointment of a second thesis advisor, the second thesis advisor can attend the committee meetings if he/she wishes, but cannot be a member of the thesis monitoring committee.

After the establishment of the thesis monitoring committee, changes can be made in the members with the proposal of the advisor, the recommendation of the eabd/easd presidency and the approval of eyk.

When is the latest to defend the thesis proposal?

The student who successfully completes the doctoral proficiency exam defends the thesis proposal, which includes the purpose, method, and work plan of the research he/she will conduct, orally in front of the thesis monitoring committee within a maximum of six months.

What is the process followed for a student who has been given a correction to a doctoral thesis proposal?

One month is given for correction. At the end of this period, the decision given by the absolute majority in favor or against is reported to the institute with a record by the eabd/easd presidency within three days following the end of the transaction.

What is the process followed for a student whose doctoral thesis proposal is rejected?

The student whose thesis proposal is rejected has the right to choose a new advisor and/or thesis topic. In this case, a new thesis monitoring committee can be appointed. The student who wants to continue the program with the same advisor is taken to defend the thesis proposal again within three months, while the student who changes the advisor and thesis topic is taken within six months. The affiliation of the student whose thesis proposal is also rejected in this defense is terminated with the institute.

What is the process followed for a student whose doctoral thesis proposal has been accepted?

The thesis monitoring committee for the student whose thesis proposal is accepted meets at least twice a year, once between January-June and once between July-December. The student submits a written report to the committee members at least one month before the meeting date. This report includes a summary of the work done so far and a plan for the work to be done in the next period. The student's thesis work is determined as successful or unsuccessful by the committee. The student who is found unsuccessful by the committee twice in a row or three times intermittently is severed from the institute.

What are the conditions that a student who will take the doctoral thesis defense exam must meet?

In order for the student's thesis to be concluded, it is necessary to successfully present at least three thesis monitoring committee reports, have a scientific article accepted/published in at least one national or international refereed journal, have a patent/utility model certificate, fulfill one of these conditions under the name of the university and meet the minimum course/credit conditions within the periods determined within the framework of the postgraduate regulation.

Who does the doctoral thesis jury consist of?

The doctoral thesis jury is appointed with the recommendation of the advisor and the presidency of eabd/easd and the approval of eyk. The jury consists of five faculty members, including the advisor, three of whom are members of the student's thesis monitoring committee and at least two from other higher education institutions. The relevant eyk decides whether the advisor has the right to vote. If the advisor does not have the right to vote, the jury consists of six faculty members. In addition, a second thesis advisor can be included in the jury without the right to vote.

What is the procedure if one of the jury members does not attend the doctoral thesis defense exams?

If any of the exam jury members do not attend, it is held with the participation of the substitute member upon the call of the eabd/easd president. If the jury member selected from a different higher education institution does not attend the exam, the substitute member from outside is invited to the exam.

What are the procedures to be followed after the completion of the doctoral thesis defense exam?

After the completion of the thesis exam, the jury decides on the thesis with a simple majority as acceptance, rejection or correction in a closed session to the audience. Students whose thesis is accepted are considered successful. This decision is reported to the relevant institute with a record by the eabd/easd presidency within three days following the thesis exam.

The affiliation of the student whose thesis is found unsuccessful and rejected is terminated with the institute.

The student who is given a correction decision about his thesis defends his thesis again in front of the same jury after making the necessary corrections within a maximum of six months.

The affiliation of the student who is also found unsuccessful in this defense is terminated with the institute.

For those who have been accepted to the doctorate with a bachelor's degree and who are unsuccessful in the thesis, a non-thesis master's degree is given upon request according to the fourth paragraph of the 25th article.
